Homage to the New Year (Past Year?)

I would like to pay homage

To the dust of crumbled leaves

And the mist of evaporated snow;

To steam drifting out of winter mugs

And chipped paint beneath impatient fingernails;

To dampness left by tea-drenched napkins and melting ice

And wisp-tails of bitter, bygone clouds;

To foam nudged onto frozen shores

And unfurled cigarette stubs scuffed into sidewalk cracks.

You are all in my eyes

And yet I strain to remember

Glinting sun through squinting lids

And flower fuzz in lazy summer haze

For swift, biting winds

Sweep warm visions away.
